Therapeutic Process

Goals for therapy may be specific: Change in behaviour, improved relations with friends or family), or more general (less anxiety, better self-esteem). The length of therapy depends on the complexity and severity of problems.

An initial consultation session with the parents will be conducted, during which Dr Fourie will gain a better understanding of the parents’ as well as the child’s background history and the reason for wanting to start therapy.

The purpose of the first three to four sessions (initial assessment) is to get a good understanding of any concerns your child might be experiencing, to understand the family context and to set goals for therapy.

Gathering collateral (with parental permission), includes getting information from any other professionals involved in your child’s life.
A feedback session with the parents allows for the discussion of the assessment results as well as an effective treatment plan to address any identified areas of difficulty.  Referrals to other professionals (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, mediators) are made when appropriate and necessary.
A proposed number of sessions will be discussed in your feedback session following the assessment.

Therapy sessions with the child or adolescent will commence, during which each child will be treated according to their specific needs. The length of a therapy process varies depending on the needs of your child.

Follow-up feedback sessions with the parents, gives the opportunity to assess the child’s progress and treatment plan.
